COSHH Data Sheets
COSSH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.
This relates to the regulations which are intended to protect
people from ill health caused by exposure to hazardous substances.
The Regulations require employers to:
- assess the risks to health and safety
in the workplace
- determine what precautions are needed
to
prevent ill health
- prevent or control exposure to
hazardous substances
- ensure that the right control measures
are used and maintained
- carry out health
surveillance if appropriate and monitor exposure
- ensure that all employees are
properly rained, supervised and kept informed.
What is a Hazardous Substance?
Chemicals should be
identified by orange hazard warning symbols on the
containeers which indicate how toxic, harmful or corrosive a chemical
is. All Chemex Chemicals are marked with the appropriate signage.
- Any substance that has been
assigned a
workplace exposure limit.
- Dust in high levels of concentration
- Biological agents such as viruses,
fungi, bacteria and parasites.
- High levels of carbon
dioxide and
nitrogen
- Tobacco smoke or radon gases
Routes of entry into the body
This can be through
inhalation, ingestion or by skin contact. Avoid contact with the eyes
and seek medical advice immediately upon contact. Some hazardous
substances can pass into the body through puncture wounds in the skin
or general cuts.
