Biological Treatment for Waterless Urinals

The Current Situation
Most of the urinals you come across are water flushed but there are a few suppliers of biological treatments for waterless urinals and we are starting to see more urinals operating as waterless systems.

Water Usage

Urinals use more water in flushing than you might think. Water use figures can be found if you click here. Water consumption will vary greatly but it is estimated that an average urinal will flush every 45 to 60 minutes and this will cost in the region of £150 per year for each urinal, depending on location. This figure for water costs can cover a wide range because flush volumes and frequencies vary such a lot. The different water authorities also have different charges for water.
High use urinals will use much more water than this. Low use urinals can be adjusted to flush less frequently but for good hygiene it needs to be flushed regularly.
The average water cost in the UK is just under £3 per 1000 litres and in Southern England it is higher than this.

Chemex Solution

Chemex set out to produce a biological product for this market with these design objectives :
1) Little or no water use in urinals
2) No plumbing changes required.
3) Consistent fragrance over the life of the block.
4) Breakdown of uric acid and scale which cause blockages.
5) It is recognised that the most important feature is overcoming bad odours.

Product Description

A small white plastic cage in two parts. The two parts of the cage can be clipped together to contain a
Chemzyme Block.
The block is based on a solid form, slow dissolving surfactant which is blended with cherry fragrance and bacteria.
The block is designed to slowly dissolve away over a period of approximately 4 weeks, gradually
releasing the bacteria and fragrance into the urinal. Actual results vary depending on use.
The bacteria are strains selected for their ability to produce enzymes which digest the smell causing
materials and prevent uric acid and scale build up.

The Process
The daily cleaning product is Chemzyme Fresh. This is a biological cleaner containing surfactants and bacteria and is compatible with the Chemzyme Block in Cage system.
Chemzyme Fresh should be diluted 1 part to 4 parts water and sprayed onto the urinal once a day.
Important: This product is based on living micro-organisms. This means that traditional cleaning chemicals, e.g. bleach or acid de-scalers, will kill the microbes and you need to start again.
Regular use of the Chemzyme Block in Cage and Chemzyme Fresh causes a colony of active friendly
bacteria to build up in the urinal system, destroying odour causing material and keeping it clean and fresh.
Features and Benefits
Features of the Chemex product are:
1) It can be seen at a glance when the block needs replacing.
2) The block is designed to last for 4 to 5 weeks in an average urinal before the
fragrance disappears.
3) The unit can be “throwaway” and replace or just replace the block in the existing cage.
4) Pleasant cherry fragrance.
6) Little or no water usage.
7) Simple to install, service and replace –no plumbing required.
8) Potential for large savings on water costs.
It is expected that the customers’ main concerns will be the elimination of bad odours.

Method of Use
1) Turn off the water altogether or reduce the water use to one flush per day.
2) Place the Chemzyme Cage with Block in the urinal using the plastic tail to secure it.
3) Once a day wash the urinal by throwing a litre or so of water into the urinal to wash
away loosened scale. 1 litre should be sufficient.
4) After the water wash, spray the urinal with a solution of Chemzyme Fresh. Dilute
Chemzyme Fresh to 3 or 4 to 1 with water and apply from a trigger sprayer. Job done.
5) Repeat once a day.
6) After 4 weeks replace the block and cage.

Washroom areas

Washroom floors can also smell bad. Chemzyme Fresh can also be used to keep washroom floors clean and fresh. Dilute at up to 40 to 1 with water and mop over the floor.
Remember: AVOID the use of ACIDIC, ALKALINE or BLEACH based cleaners, especially in the urinals.
These will kill the active bacteria.
