A new service has been launched to help businesses in Somerset comply with health and hygiene rules. Mike Sansum, 56, has invested in a franchise with Chemex International, supplying hygiene consultancy and products from Bath across the Mendips to Weston-super-Mare.

Chemex is Europe’s leading supplier of cleaning and hygiene products and provides businesses with cleaning products and free advice and training on health & safety and hygiene matters.

Mike will be concentrating on supplying Chemex products to care homes, hotels and restaurants in an area including Weston-super-Mare, Bath, Wells and Cheddar.

The real ale fan will also be targeting pubs: “I see it as reciprocal trading. I have been spending my money in lots of pubs in this beautiful area over the years,” said Mike. But his patch also includes lots of local cider makers, breweries and dairies where hygiene and cleanliness are crucial.

Married with four children, Mike has sold everything from toothpaste to cheese over the years. He has worked in the wine and catering industries but was made redundant late last year after 20 years in contact lens sales.

“I was looking round for a franchise, for a challenge in establishing my own business and Chemex were ideal. They are so well organised and their products are superb,” he said.

“With Chemex there is a strong element of repeat business and customer service which means being able to build up good customer relationships, part of the business I enjoy the most.”

Mike will initially be running the business from Bristol until he can find suitable premises in Somerset.

Not only will Mike be supplying businesses with cleaning and hygiene products but he will also offer free training and advice on the use of Chemex cleaning products, as well as on safety and hygiene control.

As the business builds he plans to employ staff from both the Bath and the Weston-super-Mare areas to help maintain the customer service that will be the foundation of Chemex Bath & West.

“At my age, starting a new business is an exciting challenge. It’s given me a new lease of life.” he said.
